Accommodation on RAW Tours

Accommodation Types

At Raw Africa Eco-Tours, our African adventures are all about the experiences you’ll have along the way. But we also know that where you sleep and the type of accommodation you stay in, is equally important.

That’s why at RAW, we work with local communities to ensure you stay in unique accommodation while benefiting the towns and communities we’re visiting.

We stay in a range of accommodation types, all designed to help you have a truly unique experience in Africa.

Types of accommodation:

Permanent tented camps are permanent structures, which sometimes come with a little bit of luxury. You might know them as glamping. You’ll generally have your own bathroom and a permanent floor, sometimes you’ll even have your own balcony but as with all accommodation types, permanent tented camps come in all shapes, sizes and levels of luxury (or not).

Mobile tented camps are set up as we go. Your ‘home for the night’ will be all set up when you get there (you won’t be expected to erect your own tent) but the mobile nature of tented camps gives us a chance to really engage with nature, to position ourselves in the heart of a forest, for instance. You’ll generally have shared bathroom facilities and who knows what kind of visitors might wander through the camp in the night? Our guests have watched in wonder as elephants have joined the camp and seen evidence of monkeys visiting overnight.

The guest houses we stay in can be attached to communities or schools(!). Guest houses are generally small dwellings that our guests have to themselves. You’ll be completely catered for in the guest house. Bathroom facilities can be shared among the group or individual depending on the particular guest house.

At RAW Africa Eco-Tours we are all about conservation and making sure our adventures have as little impact as possible on the world around us. So, it’s no surprise that we often stay in eco-lodges on our tours. An eco-lodge is generally a small accommodation complex designed to have minimal impact on its environment. You’ll generally have your own bathroom and everything in the lodge will be created with sustainability in mind. It’s important to know that in Africa, sometimes the eco-lodges we stay in have open sides to maximise your chance of seeing wildlife and feeling a part of the environment – but don’t worry, you’ll always have a mosquito net over your bed and sufficient walls to ensure you won’t have any wild animals visiting your room!

You probably don’t need us to tell you what a hotel is, but sometimes we will stay in a hotel if we think they are the best located accommodation for our adventures in a particular area. In a hotel you’ll have your own bathroom facilities and generally access to a dining area. Hotels generally have a large number of rooms so we’ll be sharing the facility with lots of other travellers to a particular area.

Small Groups

Our average group size is 6 to 8 people. We have amazing guides and we think everyone deserves to spend quality time benefitting from their extensive knowledge of wildlife and culture. We stay at many community-operated lodges and guest houses which are ecofriendly and can’t host large groups. We keep our groups small enough to enjoy every part of our tour but big enough to enjoy a variety of travel companions.

Act for Wildlife

All of RAW Africa Eco-Tours journeys are linked to local enterprise programs so that the majority of your tour dollar directly benefits local people and wildlife. RAW Africa Eco-Tours is passionate about educating travellers on how you can support communities and wildlife directly through a simple action you can do while on tour or at home. All RAW adventurers leave Africa knowing they did something that actually made a difference.

Unique Experiences

In the same way that every zebra has a unique stripe pattern, all our RAW Africa Eco-Tours journeys are unique. We strive to show you the real soul of Africa on all our journeys. We visit wildlife areas, programs and communities that are off the beaten track and team with local guides and businesses who are excited to share the intimate connection they have with their region and its people. Your experiences will be unique, genuine, personal and unforgettable.

Supporting Local Communities

RAW Africa Eco-Tours was created out of a shared vision to secure Africa’s wildlife future through responsible and ethical ecotourism. We partner with local conservation and ecotourism organisations, which means that more than 80% of your tour money directly benefits local people, local communities and local wildlife.
