After an early breakfast we set off on our journey to the Masai Mara. At 30 miles in length, the Mara River is best known for the dramatic and legendary wildebeest crossing, shown in wildlife documentaries worldwide. This afternoon we will embark on a game drive to aquaint ourselves with the incredible wildlife that resides all around us. Tonight we’ll sit back and enjoy a ‘sundowner’ while watching the locals frolic in the water below. Look out for elephants, crocodiles, hippos and zebras among others.

Known as one of the finest wildlife destinations in the world and with 95 species of mammals, your chances of ticking off the ‘Big Five” are pretty high. We will spend our first morning on a game walk along the edge of the Mara river, before heading in to the reserve for game drives. Experience a picnic lunch on the open plains or opt for an early morning balloon safari (additional cost US $455pp). We will also visit a local village to learn about Maasai customs and culture. These 2 days in the Masai Mara will be full of game drives like no other!

After breakfast we farewell the mighty Masai Mara and transfer by road to Isibania- the border crossing to Tanzania. Once in Tanzania we will continue on to the Serengeti National Park.

Nothing can prepare you for the extraordinary landscape of the Serengeti National Park. Its endless plains are teeming with zebra, wildebeest, antelope and elephants. And if you’re a fan of big cats, you’ll love it here even more, with more than 50% of Tanzania’s lion population residing within its boundaries. Make sure you look up as well as down so you can spot the cheetahs and leopards too! We’ll spend the tonight under the starry African sky. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

We have time for one more early morning game drive in the Serengeti before we make our way to the rim of Ngorongoro crater. This incredible volcanic crater was formed over three million years ago and was designated as a National Park in 1979. The crater is home to the largest elephants in Tanzania and the only park where you’ll find the black rhino.

Today we descend 600m into the base of the caldera. We’ll spend the day on a breath-taking game drive across the floor of the crater. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a Unesco World Heritage listed site, famous for the diversity of its wildlife and its unique ecology. You’ll never quite forget the experience of standing on the rim or descending down into the caldera to go in search of some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife. In the afternoon we travel to the bustling town of Keratu, located near the edge of the Rift Valley Plateau.

Situated at the base of the towering Gregory Rift Mesa, Lake Manyara National Park is famous for its flamingos, diverse water birds, hippos
and tree climbing lions! Today we get to explore the park, before heading through the picturesque countryside to the outskirts of Tarangire National Park.

Among the most striking of all the landscapes in East Africa, the Tarangire National Park is home to an array of magnificent Baobab trees, as well as a host of elephants, zebra and lions, and the mighty Tarangire River. Today we get to explore the many waterways, swamplands and forests of this mighty park. This evening we head back to Arusha for our last evening in this wildlife haven.

You’ll have plenty of time to adjust to your surroundings and meet your fellow travellers before we get together for dinner to discuss the next 12 days and the role that Dr Jane Goodall has played in wildlife conservation here in Tanzania.

Today we will experience first-hand the diverse and sometimes challenging work of the Roots and Shoots programs in Tanzania, which started in 1991. We will have the option to visit the heart-warming Donkey Project or one of the more established programs in a local secondary school.

We will leave at dawn for a game drive you will never forget, on the floor of the stunning Ngorongoro Crater. This incredible volcanic crater was formed over three million years ago and was designated as a National Park in 1979. The crater is home to the largest elephants in Tanzania and the only park where you’ll find the black rhino.  After a morning packed with wildlife viewing, we’ll head west towards the Serengeti. On the way we will visit Ol Duvai Gorge and explore the amazing archaeological finds that expanded our knowledge of human evolution. Ol Duvai is where Jane’s story began as she was employed by Louis Leakey in 1960 and sent to Gombe Streams to study chimpanzees and their possible link to human evolution. Once we arrive in the Serengeti there will be time for a late afternoon game drive before settling into our campsite for a night under the Serengeti stars.

We’ll make an early start for a spectacular dawn game drive. Return to camp for breakfast, before heading back out for a full day of wildlife spotting. Today youll begin to understand just how expansive and diverse Serengeti National Park is. With significnat populations of lion, cheetah, leopard and of course the famous wildebeest and zebra herds, Serengeti never disapoints. Tonight we’ll spend a second night under the magnificent Serengeti sky.

After an early morning game drive we will leave the Serengeti and start heading to western Tanzania. As we drive we will pass through small villages, stunning rock formations and striking landscapes. We will overnight in the small town of Kahama.

Today we will make an early start to reach Kigoma. We pass along back roads and through untouched landscapes to reach Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The lake is the longest in the world and one of Africa’s great lakes with its beautiful fresh water and stunning vistas.

This morning we will visit Roots and Shoots Kigoma. The Roots and Shoots program has more than 2000 members in Tanzania alone and now operates in over 130 countries world-wide to inspire students to become caring and empowered citizens of the world. The program builds on the legacy of Jane Goodall by encouraging students to take an interest in and action to support wildlife, people and the environment around them. After a morning with Roots and Shoots Kigoma, we will travel by boat on Lake Tanganyika to Gombe Streams National Park. Finish the day with a discussion on the lake shore about the history of JGI at Gombe and current and future research programs.

Today will be an unforgettable day as we trek to find Jane’s troop of chimpanzees in Gombe National Park. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see chimpanzees in their natural habitat. It is a truly magical experience watching wildlife in their own environment, especially as these are the very chimpanzees that Jane studied during her pivotal research.

This morning we’ll be taken on a guided tour of the JGI research facilities at Gombe National Park. We’ll get to meet the researchers and students who have committed their time to continue Jane’s work. We will then head to Kigoma to catch a flight across this magnificent landscape to Dar Es Salaam.

We’ll have the opportunity today to learn more about the wonderful work the ‘Roots & Shoots’ organisation is doing in the Pugu forest. Locals work together throughout the clubs here to identify local problems facing their surrounding environments, animals and communities. You’ll learn about the local community and the work of the organisation, and leave with a greater appreciation of the unique challenges facing those living in this part of the world. You might even plant a tree and give a bit back to this unique forest area.

Today we say goodbye to Tanzania as we prepare for onward travels or our journey home. We hope you have gained a greater understanding of the incredible work of the Jane Goodall Institute, particularly through the Roots and Shoots program.

We’ll meet you upon your arrival at Stone Town and take you to your accommodation where we’ll tell you all about the next six days and what your adventure entails! If you’re lucky enough to arrive before dinner, enjoy a guided walk around the Forodhani Market on Stone Town’s waterfront and sample fresh seafood  and freshly squeezed sugar cane, ginger and lime juice.

Our day starts at a local, community-owned spice farm. The lively tour is sure to fire up the senses, as you learn all about the different spices Zanzibar is famous for. You’ll have ample opportunity to support the locals and buy some to take home with you! We’ll spend the afternoon on a tour ambling through the winding alleys, colourful bazaars and historical sites of central Stone Town including the famous slave markets of Zanzibar. In the evening we watch the sun sink into the striking waters of the Indian Ocean while sailing the coastline of Zanzibar on a traditional Dhow and sipping a glass of wine.

For our last day in Stonetown we will take you on a culinary journey with a local cooking class in the wonderful home of mama Mona. Learn how to prepare simple dishes with local Zanzibar spices while enjoying stories of the history and culture of this wonderful Spice Island. In the evening continue our culinary journey with a traditional dinner and local cocktail in Emerson’s famous rooftop Tea House.

Today we head to central Zanzibar for a guided stroll through Jozani Forest, as well as visit the Mangrove Forest. One of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red colobus monkey, the superb nature trails of the Jozani Forest means plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of the monkeys leaping between the treetops, only inches away! After our forest walk, we will make our way to Kizimkazi Beach, home to local dolphins and with picturesque bays dotted with fishing boats. This is the best place to escape the crowds and enjoy some beach downtime. There are many lovely restaurants in the area and you will have the freedom to seek out fresh seafood with a cocktail or two.

Famous for its white sands and crystal clear blue waters, Kizimkazi beach is the perfect setting to enjoy the rest of your time in Zanzibar. Spend your day swimming, snorkelling or just relaxing with a good book. And if you’re in the mood for something a little more lively why not have a go at some water sports? Sea kayaking, scuba diving and parasailing are all available. For your last evening on the island, why not dine at the famous Rock Restaurant perched on a rocky island just off shore.
