Visit Lemur Park and Sanctuary to meet seven free ranging species of  lemur. A perfect introduction to the different groups of lemurs that you will encounter on your journey.

With several endemic species within its ecosystem, Lake Alaotra is classified as a RAMSAR wetland of importance in Madagascar. Travel to the lake and visit the local bat colony and learn more about the community conservation projects in the area.

Canoe through the bamboo thickets and reeds of lake Alaotra, in search of the only primate in the world exclusively found in wetlands, the Alaotra Gentle Lemur or swimming lemur, known locally as the Bandro. Travel to Analamazoatra National Park in the afternoon.

Explore Analamazoatra National Park in search of the largest lemur species, the indri. Get up close and personal with the brown lemur of Lemur Island and finish the day with a night walk to spot chameleons, frogs and the nocturnal lemur species.

Cross Lake Rasoabe and the Pangalanes canel by boat, to reach Palmarium Reserve, home to 12 different species of lemur including the aye aye.

Spend the morning wandering the many trails of the reserve and in the evening visit Aye Aye Island. The aye aye is one of the most intriguing and unique members of the lemur family. Viewed with superstition by local communities, the aye aye are often chased from their forest home. Aye Aye Island was established as a safe refuge for these unique creatures.

We will Venture into the reserve for a morning walk, afterwards we will travel
by boat back through the canals and by road to Andasibe.
Enjoy an evening walk through the beautiful Orchid Garden.

After a leisurely morning we will begin our journey back to Tana. En route
we will visit Peyrieras Reptile Reserve where you will learn about some of
the unique reptiles, amphibians and butterflies of Madagascar.
Spend the evening relaxing at our guest house.

After an early flight to Morondava, we will pass through the avenue of the
Baobabs on our way to Kirindy National Park.
This park is home to the rare sportive lemur and the unique fossa! The fossa
is Madagascar’s only carnivore and is specialised at climbing trees to hunt
lemur species.
Head out on an evening walk to spot some of the rare lemur of Kirindy.

Wake up and enjoy an invigorating early morning walk in search of the fossa
and the many endemic lemurs of the Kirindy Forest. We will then travel back to Baobab Alley.
Here we get to plant our very own baobab sapling before relaxing to watch the
sun set over this stunning landscape.
We will continue on to Morondava where we will spend the night.

After an early breakfast we set off on our journey to Antsirabe. This is a
day of travel through the winding mountains and highlands of Madagascar.
Antsirabe was once the island’s most famous trade centre.
Antsirabe is known for its precious stones, crafts and locally made beer!

This morning we’ll travel to the lush forests of the south east. We’ll enjoy lunch
with traditional music before arriving at Ranomafana National Park.
Tonight we finish the evening with a night walk to see how many of the 130
different species of frog we can spot!

Ranomafana NP is famous for its rare lemur species such as the golden and greater bamboo lemur and Milne Edwards sifaka. We’ll start our day with an early morning walk through the park with CVB researchers and see first hand how CVB works to protect the unique and biologically diverse ecosystems.
In the afternoon we will visit one of the local villages and experience traditional
Malagasy way of life.

Anje Reserve was established in 2001 by the local community in order to preserve their forest habitat and the charismatic ring tailed lemur. Today we’ll travel south from to this reserve to spend an hour within a few feet of this lively lemur species.
After lunch we will visit a community paper-making workshop before continuing on to the stunning valley of Isalo.

The Isalo National Park is a rocky valley filled with waterfalls and striking rock formations.
We’ll spend this morning on a fabulous gorge walk before having lunch in the wonderful lemur picnic ground.
Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool, or maybe indulge in a massage before taking in the
spectacular sunset.

Today we set off early from Isalo to the coastal town of Ifaty. We’ll visit Zombitse National Park, made up of spiny thickets and dry deciduous woodlands. The park is home to several endemic lemur species such as the Zombitse sportive lemur as well as Verreaux’s sifaka.

In the afternoon we will arrive at the beachside town of Ifaty. Enjoy a walk along the beach or a dip
in the ocean!

This morning we visit a project with real heart. Many lemurs are rescued from the pet trade and are brought to the Brigitte Bardot Lemur Rescue Centre for rehabilitation. As the centre is located inside the Ifaty Botanical gardens, we’ll also learn about the unique flora of Madagascar on a short guided walk of the gardens.

After breakfast we head to the Tulear Airport for our flight to Antananarivo. Depart Tana anytime
after 2pm for home, with memories of this truly unique island – its wildlife, culture and people.

After breakfast we will head to Tulear and catch a speed boat to the beach town of Anakao. If you are feeling adventurous, we can organize a local cart to take you out to the boat! We will travel across sandy roads to Tsimanampetsotse National Park ( whose name means “the lake of no dolphins”). This park is full of surprises from the lake, the flamingos, and Mitoho cave full of blind fish, to some of the oldest baobabs in the world. In fact Tsimanampetsotse is listed as one of the most important ecological regions in the world, with 95% of its species being completely endemic. Tsimanampetsotse is also rich in fossils, with the remains of giant tortoises, crocodiles and the elephant bird being discovered in one of its many caves. After spending the afternoon in the park we will continue on to the coastal town of Itampolo.

Today we will travel along dry river beds and coastal beach roads to the town of Lavanono. This journey will take us through the lands of the Mahafaly tribe. The Mahafaly believe that your tomb is your final resting place and should tell a story of your life, hopes and dreams. The tombs are covered in bright paintings and totems called alo alo, and can be seen scattered throughout the landscape of the south.

Lavanono is located below the dramatic cliffs of the Karimbola Plateau. After a relaxing morning we will drive onto the plateau and start our journey to Berenty Reserve. As we pass through the Mandrare Valley, we will begin to see a landscape dominated by sisal plants. The valley forests have exceptionally high species endemism and diversity with spiny forests meeting rain-forests.

We will depart early for the Greater Tsingy of Beramaha National Park. Traverse the park on a series of aerial suspension bridges and walkways. Keep an eye out for the rare species of bird that inhabit the park and be amazed by leaping lemurs that cross the spiny pinnacles with ease.

This morning we will make our way through the rugged green mountains of the south-west, to Taolagnaro (Fort Dauphin). Taolagnaro is the historical site of the oldest buildings on Madagascar with Portuguese forts dating from 1504 and 1643. This southern town is beautifully located on a peninsula surrounded by beaches, spiny forests, and towering mountains. We will spend the afternoon exploring the town and historical sites before finishing our day with a beach sunset.

After breakfast we head to the Taolagnaro Airport for our flight to Antananarivo. Depart Tana anytime after 2 pm for home, with memories of this truly unique island – its wildlife, culture, and people.

This morning we will pick you up from your Tana accommodation and head west of the capital, to the highlands of the Marina people. This is an area that is dominated by rolling hills and rice farms. We will spend the next 2 nights in the buzzing town of Ampefy. Located on the shore of Lake Itasy, Ampefy is well known for its hospitality, wonderful local restaurants, waterfall and fishing.

Today we will explore the Ampefy region. We will wander down to the shores of the lake and take a wooden pirogue to see traditional fishing and lake life. We will wander through the local market and dine at one of the beautiful restaurants overlooking the main street. After lunch, feel free to walk the main street of town or visit the local waterfall, Chute de la Lily.

After a relaxing breakfast on the shore of the lake, we will travel further west as we leave the main road and travel backroads more frequented by Zebu carts than cars.

Journey through small villages and rice fields until we reach Ambavahady Anosy. If it is market day, we will stop and grab some supplies and sample some of the local rum! Once we reach the farm, take a sunset wander across the rice fields and finish our day with a family meal.

Wake at dawn to the smell of fresh coffee and warm bread! The family kitchen overlooks the fields, take your coffee watching the farm come to life. Observe how to hitch zebu to the traditional plough or plant rice seedlings or harvest, winnow, gather and bag the rice. It’s harder than it looks! During your down time, learn how to play the very competitive sport of dominos or Bocce! Time permitting, take a walk into town to visit a local school and see how the community balances farm life and education. Finish your day with one of the joys of local farm life – music. Malagasy people are natural poets, singers and beautiful guitar players. Most evenings are spent relaxing around the table, enjoying local rum and song.

After another morning watching Malagasy life go by, we will take a gradual journey back to Tana. Depart Tana anytime after 4pm for home, with memories of heartfelt Malagasy hospitality. 

Daily comforts 

Homestays give you a chance to experience traditional life, but it’s only natural to wonder about the comforts of local life. Toilet: Most traditional homes have a separate toilet for guests.

These are drop toilets with a fixed seat for comfort. Bathrooms are kept clean and hygenic. Food: Farm food is based on rice and vegetables or stews. Breakfast is traditionally coffee or tea, cheese and bread. Beds: Guest beds are separate to the family and tend to be a comfortable mattress on the floor, with sheets, blankets and mosquito nets. All guests share the same room. Wifi: The closest network is a 10 min walk from the main farm house.

We then journey north, crossing the Manambolo River until we reach Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park. The Tsingy are limstone forests created by ground water eroding the plateau above, creating needle-like formations. Upon arrival we will walk amongst the Little Tsingy or relax beside the Tsiribinhina River…… if you can say it, then we’ll buy you a drink!

In the afternoon, continue to explore this unique landscape with an easy walk through the lesser Tsingy, which is located along the banks of the river.

After breakfast we will begin our journey south, until we reach Baobab Alley. We will spend some time amongst these giants of the plant world. Wander among these magnificent trees and join us as we plant a baobab sapling and support the growth of new trees in this unique forest. In the late afternoon we will continue to Morondava for the night.

Antsirabe is situated among the Ankaratra Mountains and was once the centre of trade in Madagascar. It is a popular spa town known for its thermal springs, many colourful rickshaws, French colonial buildings and souk-like market stalls. We will take a morning walk around the town centre before returning to Tana.

On our first day in Tana we will take a tour around this eclectic city with its cobbled roads and winding alleys. The history of the kingdom of Madagascar is complex and what better way to learn more about the Malagasy royal family than to visit the King’s Palace. Built in the 1600’s, the palace was the seat of royalty until French colonisation. Finish our day in one of our favourite restaurants overlooking the city.

Today we will travel east of the capital to the town of Andasibe. Spend the afternoon at the Analmazaotra National Park looking for a variety of lemur species, including indri, bamboo and mouse lemur. In the evening we head out for a night walk to look for chameleons, frogs, sifaka lemurs and a host of other nocturnal species.

If you’ve ever wanted to get up close and personal with a lemur then this is your chance! Lemur Reserve was established as a centre for rescued lemurs. There is nothing quite as magical as a lemur sitting on your shoulder as you take a walk through this picturesque island forest. We’ll also visit the reptile education centre before returning to Antananrivo.

After an early breakfast we set off on our journey to Antsirabe, famous for its precious stones and fossils. Upon arrival, we will take a walk around the city centre and learn about the importance of this area as a central trade route pre and post colonisation. The city is well known for its architecture as well as its horse drawn carts and locally produced beer!

As well as its colonial past, Antsirabe is known for its wealth of precious stones and fossils, so today we’ll visit a local gem workshop before we head south. Located in the south east of Madagascar, Ranomafana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and gets its name from the Malagasy word for “hot springs”, which are located in the central part of town.

We’ll start our day with an early morning walk through the park. Ranomafana National Park is famous for its rare lemur, chameleon and frog species. In the afternoon we’ll visit a local women’s silk weaving group where we’ll learn all about this amazing craft. Of course the nocturnal lemurs are just as important, so we’ll return in time for a dusk walk to try to spot the mouse lemur as well as nocturnal chameleons!
